Waiving Student Health Insurance

Proof of Coverage Requirement

Students with health insurance coverage must sign an online waiver demonstrating coverage comparable to the University-sponsored plan by the deadline. Students must verify that the basic benefits provided by the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) are included in your current health insurance policy. If any of these benefits are not covered through your current policy, you will not be considered sufficiently insured and will be enrolled in the SHIP.

Students who fail to complete the waiver process prior to the deadline will be subject to mandatory enrollment in the SHIP and billing of the annual premium amount to their Student Account. Once enrolled in the plan, there are no appeals permitted.

Students must pay attention to timely notifications in their USciences emails from customerservice@firstriskadvisors.comand take action if you do intend to waive the SHIP.  Please note: SHAC does not oversee or manage the SHIP waiver process. All inquiries must be directed to First Risk Advisors, the underwriter of  the SHIP. All questions/concerns can be submitted on their Contact Page

Does my insurance qualify for a waiver?

In order to be eligible for a SHIP waiver, a student's personal health insurance plan must offer equivalent or greater benefits than what the SHIP offers. You must complete the online waiver each academic year in order to verify that the basic benefits provided by the SHIP are included in your current health insurance policy. If any of these benefits are not covered through your current policy, you will not be considered sufficiently insured and will be enrolled in the SHIP. The basic benefits for comparable coverage are:

  • Annual deductible less of $2,500 per person, per plan year; family deductible $6000 or less
  • Annual plan maximum limit consistent with the Affordable Care Act regulations
  • Coverage for pre-existing conditions
  • Coverage for inpatient and outpatient medical services in the Philadelphia region (i.e. physician visits; day surgery fees)
  • Coverage for laboratory tests and radiology
  • Coverage for inpatient and outpatient mental health and substance abuse treatment up to 30 days in the Philadelphia region
  • Coverage for prescription drugs (can be a separate plan)

How do I waive the SHIP?

The waiver application is available online during the scheduled waiver periods, listed below:

  • Summer 2021: 05/01/21 - 06/30/21 (Incoming and newly eligible students)
  • Fall 2021: 07/15/21 – 09/11/21 (All students, including summer students)
  • Spring 2022: 12/01/21 - 01/28/22 (Incoming and newly eligible students)

All waiver applications and documentation must be received by the deadline. No exceptions.

Do I have to waive each academic year?

Yes. Approved waivers are effective for the current academic year. A new waiver application must be submitted by the appropriate deadline each academic year, even if your health insurance coverage has not changed. It is the student’s responsibility to notify First Risk Advisors of any changes in health insurance coverage during the academic year.

What if I waived the SHIP but no longer have comparable coverage?

Students are required to maintain active health insurance coverage while in attendance at the University. It is the student’s responsibility to notify First Risk Advisors of any changes in health insurance coverage during the academic year. If your insurance coverage terminates, you must submit proof comparable coverage in another plan or enroll in the SHIP.

To obtain coverage through the SHIP, please contact First Risk Advisors. You will need to complete an enrollment application and submit documentation of prior coverage within 30 days of your termination date. The effective date of coverage under the SHIP is adjusted to begin the date when previous coverage was lost, and the premium will be adjusted/prorated accordingly.
