Chair’s Message - Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences (DPS) at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, University of the Sciences. The field of Pharmaceutical Sciences is the translational branch of Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physiology and Pharmacology. Basic science discoveries that identify disease processes and targets for intervention are translated by pharmaceutical scientists into therapies that directly impact patient care. Pharmaceutical scientists search for and discover new drugs, characterize the potential impacts on patients, both positive and negative, determine the optimal delivery of the drug to the target and determine the stability of the drug in the body, including its subsequent elimination. Drug manufacturing is another key area of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Research conducted by pharmaceutical scientists ultimately determines the effectiveness, dose, frequency of administration, and identification of potential complications for a new drug. Our students typically find jobs in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries or pursue graduate and/or clinical degrees in Medicine and Pharmacy. As personalized medicine and custom drug formulations become more a part of everyday health care, the pharmaceutical scientist will continue to be in high demand.

Our department has trained Pharmacists and Pharmaceutical Scientists for 200 years. Throughout this long and successful history, scientists trained by DPS faculty have gone on to create many of the premier pharmaceutical companies in the world today. Among these are the founders of Eli Lilly, Rorer Pharmaceuticals (Sanofi), Warner-Lambert Inc. (merged with Pfizer). McNeil Laboratories (now part of Janssen Pharmaceuticals), John Wyeth and Brother (now part of Pfizer) and Burroughs Wellcome and Company (now part of GlaxoSmithKline). You have only to look around our buildings and research labs, many of them endowed by our successful alumni, to realize our rich history. This tradition continues as we build collaborative relationships with the pharmaceutical industry. Some of our more recent collaborations include DuPont, Waters, PerkinElmer, Bristol-Myers Squibb, L'Oreal and many others.

As we look forward to our third century, the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences continues to educate new pharmaceutical scientists and advance this dynamic field. We are developing cutting edge educational programs and new research collaborations which translate to enhanced opportunities for our students. I welcome prospective students to discover the exciting field of Pharmaceutical Sciences at USciences and join the ranks of our innovative and entrepreneurial alumni.
