Student Org Spotlight: Operation OTC Medicine Safety
Operation OTC Medicine Safety is a patient care group that operates under the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP). The student organization at University of the Sciences aims to educate the community on safe use and storage of over-the-counter medications. Org Chair Kishan Patel PharmD‘23 shares more about the organization and its mission.
Describe Operation OTC Medicine Safety - what is the purpose or mission?
The mission of OTC Medicine Safety is to educate 5th through 8th-grade students and their families about the safe use and storage of over-the-counter medicines. We strive to accomplish this by creating programming that addresses a variety of topics such as reading medicine directions, following OTC label directions, proper measurement of medicine, safe storage and disposal of medicine, and consulting with a parent or guardian before taking medications.
Why did you join Operation OTC Medicine Safety?
I joined OTC Medicine Safety because it allows me to fulfill my responsibilities as a student pharmacist in educating children and their families about the safe use and storage of OTC medications. In pharmacy school, we learn about the different medication therapies to help treat patients and I believe it's equally important to be able to educate them on the safety of medications as well.
What do you like most about Operation OTC Medicine Safety?
What I love most about OTC Medicine Safety is the direct impact it has on individuals. Whether it is through our weekly Instagram campaigns or helping out in our surrounding community, I am glad to be a part of an organization that values patient safety and health education.
