USciences Announces New Leadership, New Members to the Board of Trustees

University of the Sciences’ Board of Trustees has elected new leadership and added two new members for the 2020-21 academic year.

The board unanimously elected James J. Rivard P’81, MBA, as chair of the board for 2020-2021, as Chairman Marvin Samson HonAlm’96, HonDSc’16 completed his final term as a long standing board member and chair.  The board also elected both  Michael Hemsley, Esq, BS, MA, JD, and Rose Mary Hoy, RPh, as vice-chairs for 2020-2021. Lucy Malmberg P’72 HonDSc’20, who has been a board member for nine years, completed her final term.

Board members and the University leadership team thanked Dr. Samson and Dr. Malmberg for their commitment to the University and their many years of service and dedication. Both will remain involved with USciences in different capacities.

Two new members, John P. (Jay) Borneman, MBA, PhD’07, and Edgardo (Ed) A. Mercadante P’79, RPh, HonDSc’17, were welcomed to the board, Rivard announced.

Dr. Borneman is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Standard Homeopathic Company and Hyland’s Inc, where he has been since 1987. He also serves on the boards of the Homeopathic Pharmacopeia of the United States as its President and the Consumer Healthcare Products Association. He is an emeritus director of The Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and Health Sciences, and The National Center for Homeopathy. He previously served as a member of the Board of Visitors of Philadelphia College of Pharmacy.  

Dr. Borneman earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemistry, from St. Joseph’s University as well as an MBA with a concentration in finance from the University. He subsequently earned his PhD from the Department of Health Policy and Public Health at USciences. His research interests are in the health policy considerations of healthcare access and Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM).

Dr. Mercadante is the founder and CEO of MediTelecare, a dynamic telehealth/telemedicine company delivering healthcare and behavioral healthcare to patients in long-term care facilities, rural hospitals, and community health centers. Prior to founding MediTelecare, he served as the CEO of MedOptions, the national leader in Behavioral Care to the Long-Term Care industry, and was founder/investor in PursueCare, a telehealth addiction treatment platform. He is also independently involved in Pharmacy and other health-related businesses.

In addition to his BS degree in pharmacy from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, Dr. Mercadante has pursued advanced studies in healthcare and business management at the University of South Carolina and is a registered pharmacist in numerous states. He was awarded an honorary doctor of science degree from USciences at Founders’ Day in 2017.
