The West Center was established in 1999 by a generous gift from the Herman O. West Foundation, a fund supported by West to assist employees in supporting post-secondary educational institutions and non-profit organizations of their choice. A supplemental gift from the foundation in 2002 and additional funding from the University in 2004 helped to expand the computational tools available to researchers working in the center and allowed it to provide fellowship support for postdoctoral, graduate, and undergraduate students. Subsequent federal, industrial, and foundation grant awards and contracts have magnified the resources and impact of the center.

The West Center’s expertise includes computational aided drug design, bioinformatics, structure-activity relationship, computational method development and application, molecular dynamics of biological and chemical processes, and quantum mechanics.

“The celebration brings together alumni, benefactors, researchers, and experts to honor the many years of research made possible by this investment,” said Vojislava Pophristic, interim dean Misher College of Arts and Sciences and member of the West Center. “The West Center has impacted the education of more than 100 undergraduate and graduate students. It has also enabled the development of new computational methodologies, now used by the greater scientific community, as well as design of new drug and drug delivery candidates, and novel materials. We are grateful for the continued support of our work.”

Using the high-performance computing clusters, this innovative center is focused on contributing to human knowledge by applying cutting edge computational approaches to current challenges in chemical and biological systems and to develop new computational tools and methods to model and predict chemical and biological properties.
