Religion Professor Authors Book on Material Religion

Published on November 6, 2019

Leah Comeau's BookLeah Comeau, PhD, associate professor of religion at USciences, is the author of a new book Material Devotion in a South Indian Poetic World, published by Bloomsbury Press as part of a new material religion series.

The book contributes new methods for the study and interpretation of material religion found within literary landscapes. The book offers a material interpretation of an understudies poem that defined an entire genre of South Asian literature -Tirukkovaiyar-the 9th-century Tamil poem dedicated to Shiva.

Dr. Comeau locates the materiality of devotion to Shiva in a world unique to South Indian vernacular, yet captivating to many audiences, according to the description of the book.

Dr. Comeau also guest edited a special edition of South Asian Studies. In the edition she has an editor's introudction and peer-reviewed article contribution entitled "Saturated Space, Signs of Devotion in South Indian Temples."
