Workshop Aims to Inform Students about Understanding, Serving, and Working with LGBTQ Individuals
Over 40 students and faculty from different majors pharmacy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and biology participated gathered for a LGBTQ Workshop on Feb. 2, 2018. Hosted by USciences Phi
Sigma Pi, keynote speaker Evan Thornburg, deputy director, Philadelphia Mayor’s Office
of LGBTQ Affairs, talked about “Understanding, Serving, and Working with LGBTQ Individuals.”
According to Shanaya Patel DrOt’21, the workshop taught students LGBTQ affirming terminology and healthcare needs by addressing sexual and gender minority health issues, barriers in healthcare, risk factors and health concerns, and increase cultural competence with LGBTQ populations.
“Through this workshop, Phi Sigma Pi and many students became inspired to provide more education and advocacy for the LGBTQ community,” Patel said.
