Cathy Poon, PharmD, was the recipient of two special honors in November in recognition of her service and dedication to the field of pharmacy. Dr. Poon was presented with the Honorary Alumnus Award at University of the Sciences’ annual Alumni Reunion on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016. That honor was followed by her election as a fellow into The College of Physicians of Philadelphia on Friday, Nov. 11 joining the ranks of some 1,500 innovative leaders elected for their distinguished contributions to scientific medicine, medical education, and public health.

Since 1992, Dr. Poon has played an integral role in the education of pharmacy students at USciences’ Philadelphia College of Pharmacy where she now serves as chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmacy Administration and associate dean for interprofessional education. During Dr. Poon’s tenure, she has served as an educator, practitioner, mentor, scholar and administrator.

The Honorary Alumnus Award is presented to a non-alumnus/a who has shown exemplary dedication and commitment to the mission of the University. The award, which was first given in 1983, has recognized 28 individuals who have made an impact in the lives of students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

Formally inducted into The College of Physicians of Philadelphia at a ceremony on November 11, 2016, Dr. Poon signed the historic register of fellows, dating back to 1787, that includes America’s first neurologist Silas Weir Mitchell, former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, Joseph Lister (regarded as the founder of antiseptic medicine), and Benjamin Rush, MD (who signed the United States Declaration of Independence). The College of Physicians is not an academic organization, as the name suggests, but a not-for-profit educational and cultural institution, with the mission of advancing the cause of health while upholding the ideals and heritage of medicine.

Dr. Poon received her bachelor of science degrees, toxicology and pharmacy, from College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at St. John’s University and her doctor of pharmacy degree from College of Pharmacy, Medical University of South Carolina. She completed a post-baccalaureate ASHP-accredited residency in hospital pharmacy from Medical University of South Carolina and an ASHP-accredited residency in pediatric pharmacy practice from University of Oklahoma Health Science Center.
