USciences Elects Alumnus Col. S. Rogers Wetherill to the Board of Trustees
Col. S. Rogers Wetherill, III, P'68, MS, was elected to serve on the board of trustees at University of the Sciences. The responsibilities of the University’s board include approving the University’s strategic plans and ensuring their consistency with the institution’s mission and goals.
Col. Wetherill is a retired Army pharmacy officer with over 24 years of hospital pharmacy experience. He has served in Vietnam, Germany, and numerous state-side hospital assignments. His civilian education includes a pharmacy degree from the former Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science (now USciences) in 1968 and a MS from University of Michigan in 1975. His military schooling includes Command & General Staff College and the National War College. For 15 years, he was employed by Happy Harry's in Newark, Delaware. Currently, he is an employee of Accredo Specialty Pharmacy a division on Express Scripts in New Castle, Delaware.
The profound connection the Wetherill’s share with the University dates to its founding in 1821, when four Wetherill men and 64 other apothecaries composed the list of the original founders of the college. Samuel Price Wetherill, one of the four Wetherill founders, was the first chairman of the board of trustees. In later years, other Wetherill family members have become alumni of the institution and have served on the board.
Col. Wetherill’s involvement with USciences Alumni Association started some 20 years ago. During that time he has been a director for 15 years, he served on the executive committee as vice president, president-elect, and president. Col. Wetherill has been part of the USciences alumni reunion committee for the past six years and currently serves as chair on the Alumni nominations committee.
From 2006-2009, he represented the Alumni Association as a member of the USciences board of trustees. He has represented and spoke on behalf of the Alumni Association at the University’s Convocation, Commencement, Inauguration of its 22nd president, and other functions. Col. Wetherill’s generosity and care for the institution further manifests itself through his donations to help advance the field of healthcare and pharmacy and to support current students in achieving such goals.
A new street name for an old walkway reflects the rich history the Wetherill family has offered USciences since its founding. Wetherill Way, located between 42nd and 43rd Street, provides an easy and direct route for students across Woodland Ave. Col. Wetherill regards Wetherill Way as “a lasting tribute to [his] family and the first chairman of the board of trustees and to the Wetherill’s who followed.”
In 2012, he was the recipient of the lifetime achievement award in pharmacy given by the Delaware Pharmacist’s Society.
