Chair’s Message - Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry
On behalf of the faculty, students, and alumni of the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at University of the Sciences, we would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our website. We hope that it will give you a valuable glimpse into a dynamic and closely knit group of faculty and students who are passionate about advancing and sharing their knowledge of chemistry.
Our department features a unique combination of a vibrant, science-oriented environment, a wide range of faculty expertise, and a strong research infrastructure, within small-size undergraduate and graduate programs, which encourage close faculty-student interactions. The cohesive and discovery-driven nature of the department and University fosters many opportunities for cutting-edge interdisciplinary research, engaging students and faculty in collaborations across basic and applied health-oriented sciences.
Our students work alongside the faculty in diverse areas, ranging from computational chemistry, bioinformatics, and drug design to smart nanomaterials, catalyst design, and green chemistry. The excellent student-to-faculty ratio, combined with a state-of-the-art research infrastructure, enables an intimate and, at the same time, stimulating intellectual atmosphere. It is no surprise then to have undergraduate students co-author publications distinguished as “one of the most highly cited papers of the year” or to have PhD students win national awards or see their research featured on the cover pages of major scientific journals.
After graduation our alumni become leaders in government, industry, and academia. On average, 60% of our students pursue a higher degree in science or medicine. Internships and job placement are facilitated by our strong reputation in the pharmaceutical industry and geographical proximity to many chemical and pharmaceutical companies.
We hope that you will further explore our website and find out more about our research discoveries, opportunities for collaborations, and research-based undergraduate and graduate curricula in chemistry, biochemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry (undergraduate only), bioinformatics (graduate only) and pharmacognosy (graduate only) programs. If you are interested in learning more about us and visiting our historic Philadelphia campus, where pharmacy science was born in the “New World,” please contact us at email@example.com.
