MLK Day of Service

The MLK Day of Service Planning Committee has coordinated a wide range of service projects for students, faculty and staff to participate in during USciences MLK Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 16, 2017.

To honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the University community will be united for a day of service dedicated to bettering the community, empowering individuals, and bridging barriers. While classes have been canceled, MLK Day of Service is a day on, not a day off. 

Schedule of events:


Volunteer Check-In and Kick-Off (McNeil STC Atrium)

Light refreshments will be offered. Volunteers will be given a choice of a USciences winter hat or fleece headband.


Community Clean-ups:
Woodland Avenue Corridor
48th Street Playground and Recreation Center
Clark Park
S. Weir Mitchell Elementary

Adult Health Clinic at Mt. Zion Baptist Church

USciences faculty, staff, and students will conduct health screenings at the free clinic and will be available to discuss relevant health issues.


Youth Health and Science Fair (Athletic Recreation Center Multipurpose Room)

USciences will host a free health and science fair for children offering activities including dance and yoga classes, sports clinics, hands on science experiments, games and a performance from the Kingsessing Singers Chamber Choir. 


The Civil Rights Movement in Philadelphia (Athletic Recreation Center Multipurpose Room)

A series of educational documentaries about the civil rights movement, including Dr. King’s visit to West Philadelphia, the history of the Francisville community, and efforts to desegregate Girard College.  The free showing is appropriate for all ages.

The Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.: Philosophy, Politics and the Migrant Workers Movement (McNeil STC 145)

The Department of Humanities will host an educational forum about the legacy of MLK, with presentations from USciences faculty touching on the impact of Dr. King. The forum will also include discussion with students, staff, and faculty.
