    MLK Day of Service

    The MLK Day of Service Planning Committee has coordinated a wide range of virtual activities during USciences MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 18, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Registration for individual events can be found in the schedule below. The first 300 students to register and attend a virtual event will receive $5 Devil Dollars courtesy of Sodexo.

    To honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the University community will be united for a day of service dedicated to bettering the community, empowering individuals, and bridging barriers. While we cannot be together physically as a campus community, we can still use this day to honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy of service and justice.

    9 a.m.–12 p.m.

    Cancer Support Community Activities
    9 a.m.–Coloring activity with discussion about service
    10 a.m.–USciences Inertia Dance Team leads a routine
    11 a.m.–Sodexo Food Services Executive Chef shares a healthy cooking demonstration.

    9:30–10:30 a.m. 

    Crafting Event - Produce bags and masks
    Participants will engage in a service activity of creating produce bags and masks from old T-shirts for the purpose of donating to a friend, grandparent or neighbor that is in need of these items.  Participants will need to come prepared with an old t-shirt and crafting scissors

    10 a.m.–12 p.m.

    Virtual Health Fair 
    Participants can call zoom link to ask about their blood pressure, diabetes, or asthma medications. Breakout rooms will provide participants with information on hypertension, diabetes, and updates on COVID resources

    Youth Action - Anti-Racist Tools to Defeat Ignorance 
    A workshop featuring anti-racist strategies for various situations.

    Historian's talk on MLK
    Dr. Kevin Murphy talks about some of MLK's most famous writing in historical context; talk title: "Out of Time: MLK and the Letter from a Birmingham Jail"

    12–1 p.m.

    Lunch with the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council
    Come to meet the members of the newly formed Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council.  Hear about the work they are doing and ask any questions you may have!

    12:30–1:30 p.m.

    A Student Competition: Improving Diversity & Inclusion at USciences
    PCP students will share their great idea on how to improve diversity and inclusion on campus. Winner will receive up to $500 to fund their idea.

    1–2:30 p.m.

    Youth Action - "The Weight of Death"
    A video excerpt from Anton Moore's docuseries "The Weight of Death" will be shown, followed by discussion about the impact of deadly violence on Philadelphia families.

    MLK Kahoot
    Event attendees are welcome to participate in a trivia event to learn more about the history of Dr. King.

    Student Led Discussion w/t BSU, Bridging the Gap between social justice and healthcare, How past racism affects current healthcare. Open forum for students.
