Dear Alumni and Friends,

I had the pleasure of participating in two special events this fall. Both were nothing like I had envisioned a year ago and yet, like so many of you in this pandemic, I learned that it’s more enjoyable to make lemonade out of lemons.

The Alumni Association continued with our traditions at Reunion weekend, hosting the Class of 1970 for a virtual reception. We started the day with the Annual Alumni Award Ceremony. The exceptional honorees and 50-year graduates showed us all that every generation has its hurdles and that perseverance and determination are what makes UScience alumni successful.

A week later my family celebrated the marriage of our oldest daughter. It was one of the happiest days of my life and yet it was very different than any of us had planned. Like so many couples, my daughter and her new husband learned to find happiness in a simpler but still beautiful ceremony. Most of the guests joined virtually sharing messages and well wishes, reminding us that love, family, and friendship can overcome adversity.

The COVID-19 restrictions in Philadelphia have forced the University to reimagine the Bicentennial Celebration and, while the plans may change, the celebration will be no less meaningful. Plans are underway for a virtual event on Founders’ Day, February 23, 2021, to launch a year-long celebration. Alumni Relations has released the draft of the Bicentennial Alumni Roster, a listing of all graduates to be included in the University’s archives. Visit to ensure that you are listed. Search for your family and friends as well.

I want to invite you to join us for an Alumni Association Board of Directors meeting; they are open to everyone. We encourage new participants to our meetings, and welcome these new and diverse voices. To provide the best service to our alumni, we are striving to reflect the current state of our student body. For this academic year, we will hold these meetings on Zoom, so they are a great opportunity for you to interact with your alumni from the comfort and safety of your home. They are held the first Thursday of every other month from October to April and the notices for them come in Alumni Relations bi-weekly updates. Our Alumni Board is working hard to reformat the meetings to focus on relevant topics impacting alumni as well as to inform you of the activities happening on campus.

The Alumni Relations bi-weekly updates are short messages from Casey Ryan, Director of Alumni Relations, with information, stories, and event invitations. If you are not getting them, please email Mr. Ryan at or call 215-596-8570, so he can include you.

As alumni, we are certainly facing challenges professionally, personally, and in our communities. I find myself so impressed with your resilience. You are reflecting the motto of our University that has stood for 200 years: Nosse haec omnia salus est or “To know all this is health.” Thank you.
