MPH Student to Speak at TEDxLancaster

Published on October 18, 2021

Gail Groves Scott MPH’16 will be a featured speaker at TEDxLancaster on October 25 held at the Fulton Theater in Lancaster, PA. Scott will give a talk entitled “Big Pharma and the Overdose Crisis: How I Went from Drug Rep to Whistleblower.”

In this talk, Scott will be speaking publicly for the first time about her experience helping the Department of Justice prosecute a record-setting case against an addiction medicine manufacturer, as well as policy suggestions. Over $2 billion dollars was recovered for taxpayers in civil settlements and fines, in the case involving Soboxone Film, an opioid use disorder medication. As a result of this suit, the company’s CEO and Global Medical Director pleaded guilty to misdemeanor misbranding charges, and both received six-month jail sentences.

Pharmaceutical executives are rarely criminally prosecuted and receive jail sentences, particularly related to the United States overdose crisis. An FDA spokesperson called the civil and criminal case “a fraud scheme to the detriment of the public health” due to misleading claims about the opioid addiction treatment made to a state Medicaid provider.
