Academic Technology Services
Academic Technology Services provides the teaching and learning platforms that support classroom learning, hybrid learning (classroom and online), and distance learning.
Educational technology systems and services supported by this department include: Audience Response (TurningPoint), Audio-Visual Services, Collaboration (Google Apps), Learning Management System (Blackboard), Lecture Capture (Mediasite & Panopto), Mobile Learning (USciences App), Technology Training Center, and Web Conferencing (TurningPoint).
Audience Response (TurningPoint)
The University's TurningPoint audience response systems allows students to participate in presentations or lectures by submitting responses to interactive questions using a ResponseCard™ keypad or their mobile phones. Using TurningPoint, faculty PowerPoint presentations become powerful data collection and assessment tools that collect real-time student responses, engage students and assess their learning.
The AV staff maintain Audio-visual equipment in more than 80 equipped classroom, lecture, lab, and meeting spaces on our campus. AV also provides operating staff and equipment for all university special events and student programming, as well as implements and configures emerging technologies to continue to improve student success.
Collaboration (Google Apps)
Google Apps for Education gives all faculty, students and staff a state-of-the-art communication and collaboration platform to supplement our existing e-learning infrastructure. We have the ability to share and collaboratively edit documents compatible with Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Learning Management System (Blackboard)
Blackboard is the primary learning management system and University Portal at USciences. Blackboard Learn is a highly customizable and integrated system with tools for hosting online courses, storing and managing course material, collaborating on documents and projects, and assessing the success of students and courses.
Lecture Capture (Mediasite & Panopto)
Lecture capture allows instructors to record what happens in their classrooms and make it available electronically through our Learning Management System. The recorded content includes a video of the presenter, their slide materials, and often additional images of accompanying documents.
We use Mediasite in the major lecture halls to capture high quality video of the instructor and everything that is projected in class. Panopto is a lecture capture system used in smaller classrooms. Panopto can also be used by instructors to record screencasts and learning modules in the convenience of their own office.
Mobile Learning (USciences App)
The USciences Mobile app for iOS and Android offers instant access to university news, course catalog, phone directory, library, campus map, athletics’ listings, collections of the university’s latest images and videos, emergency contact information and more.
Several of our programs currently use iPads for both classroom instruction and for mobile access to course content. The iPad offers an array of educational tools for students and faculty including access to the Blackboard Learn LMS for iOS and Android. There are also apps for interactive textbooks, anatomy diagrams, newsletters, and professional organizations.
Technology Training Center
The Technology Training Center (TTC) is located in the McNeil Science and Technology Center, room 151. It was established to meet the technology needs of faculty and staff through hands-on learning and demonstrations. The center is equipped with 12 computers, as well as two 60" flat-panel displays for instruction. The TTC provides the USciences community with a dedicated workspace for educational technology training
Web Conferencing (Adobe Connect)
Adobe Connect is USciences’ web conferencing platform for web meetings, eLearning, and webinars. It allows faculty and staff to connect with students and colleagues to host live "virtual" meetings, almost anywhere and on any device.
