Meet the Provost

Jill BarenDr. Jill M. Baren, MD, MS, MBA was named Provost and Vice-President of University of the Sciences in May 2020. She is a tenured Professor of Biological Sciences and Humanities within Misher College of Arts and Sciences. 

Dr. Baren comes to USciences after over 30 years in academic medicine and executive health care leadership. She has held multiple leadership roles as Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Penn Medicine and Chief of Emergency Services of the University of Pennsylvania Health System and is the Immediate Past-President of the American Board of Emergency Medicine and a past-president of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine. Dr. Baren was Professor of Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics, and Medical Ethics at the University of Pennsylvania where she also held the positions of faculty leadership development fellow and chair of the human research advisory committee within the Office of the Provost. Dr. Baren completed a year-long program as a fellow with the American Council of Education and served within the President’s office at Villanova University. 

She is a graduate of Brown University, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and completed a Master of Bioethics from the University and Master of Business Administration from Brandeis University. Dr. Baren is also a graduate of the prestigious Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine program for women at the Drexel University College of Medicine. 

Dr. Baren is a nationally recognized expert in the regulations that govern emergency research and has consulted with professional and governmental agencies on the application of ethical and regulatory requirements to the conduct of emergency clinical trials. Her work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and emergency medicine foundations. She has lectured extensively in national and international forums and has over 150 peer-reviewed articles, editorials and book chapters. She is a senior author of premier textbooks in the specialty of emergency medicine and emergency pediatrics.
