As the adviser of USciences' chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta, the National Honor Society for First Year Students, biologist Kevin Wolbach is impressed with the number of freshmen who meet the organization's high academic requirements.
"It's pretty phenomenal given the rigors of what our students do in their first year here," he says.
Membership is not purely honorary. Beginning in their sophomore year, inductees work on campus as peer tutors and teaching assistants and are also involved in community education activities.
"They're encouraged to become involved in the academic success of the incoming freshmen as peer mentors, and in the local community through the Wilson School, a nearby elementary school, and other opportunities," Professor Wolbach says. "It's a great organization for us to be involved with."
