Julie Mercadante entered the USciences Department of
Chemistry & Biochemistry—her “second home”—with a lifelong dream of
attending medical school.
From the beginning of her freshman year—when she first met
with her faculty advisor, Dr. Elisabeth Morlino—Julie found the support and
opportunities she needed to realize this dream. “Dr. Morlino always had an open
door and was ready to answer any questions I had about scheduling classes.”
During her sophomore year, Julie worked with Dr. Catherine Bentzley
on an independent research project. Dr.
Bentzley “was more than a research advisor, she was one of my greatest

Julie also enlisted the advice and services of her pre-health advisor Lisa
Thayer. Lisa “was essential to my success during the medical school application
and interview process” during junior year, providing step-by-step guidance that
was critical to both maintaining confidence and meeting deadlines.
This team not only introduced Julie to a multitude of
opportunities, they helped put her ahead of schedule for the next step in her
