Research Highlight

John Porter, PhD

Practicing real science is how Dr. John Porter believes USP gains ground in preparing students for the real world. Projects currently include growing fungi capable of producing anti-cancer compounds and looking at new tuberculosis drugs—focusing on a mechanism that no drug is yet targeting to inhibit the vital processes in the disease. Dr. Porter believes the advantage of this sort of collaboration is obvious, “USP students gain a better understanding of their fields and technical skills so they can fit into industrial, graduate, or clinical research quite naturally.” Students—both undergraduate and graduate—gain valuable research experience while, according to Dr. Porter, “They learn from me and from each other.”
