Specialization matters to Mark Miller. "I wanted a graduate degree in Bioinformatics, not just a concentration. USciences is the only university in Philadelphia that offers this option." Everything about the USciences Bioinformatics graduate program suited Miller’s career at pharmaceutical leader Merck & Co.—from the convenient class schedule to the relevant content. "I didn’t come across a single topic that wasn’t of some value to my work," he says. Through classroom sessions and one-on-one interaction with his instructors, Miller learned programming languages and techniques along with specific applications to biological problems. "I had the chance to write programs that look through the Protein Data Bank for the structures of enzymes in complex with their natural substrates," Miller recalls. "It was exciting to work on a problem that other researchers in my field are currently struggling with."
