ARC Sponsors Book Drive for KIPP Charter School
Several years ago, the Department of Campus Recreation began supporting KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) Charter School in North Philadelphia. Over the years, they have supplied them with sports equipment, books, funds, and more.

In September 2009, KIPP opened up a school in our neighborhood, KIPP West Philadelphia Preparatory Charter School. Taking a hands-on approach in supporting the KIPPsters, members from the Student Recreational Committee (SRC) have been tutoring students at KIPP a few times each week.

To further our support of the local school, from now until April 1, 2010, the Campus Recreation and the SRC is holding a book drive. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. See below for suggested books. Any group or individual who donates the most books, wins a prize!  All books can be dropped off at the front desk of the Athletic/Recreation Center (ARC).

About KIPP Philadelphia Charter School
KIPP, or the Knowledge is Power Program, currently serves nearly 20,000 students nationwide. KIPP Philadelphia Schools (KPS) is a network of open-enrollment, college-preparatory public charter schools, and part of the national KIPP Network of schools.  KPS currently serves grades 5-8 at KIPP Philadelphia Charter School and serves grade 5 at KIPP West Philadelphia Preparatory Charter School.
84% of students qualify for the Federal Meals Program, and 99% are African-American or Hispanic.  Despite the fact that students consistently enter KIPP schools 2-3 grade levels behind, by providing a safe and structured learning environment, more time in school, and high-quality teachers, 100% of KIPP students have been accepted to college-preparatory high schools.

Dr. Kevin Murphy Helms UArts Exchange Program
In 2006, University of the Sciences and University of the Arts (UArts) partnered to develop a student exchange agreement to allow 10 students from each university to take one course a semester at the other for no additional tuition. Under the agreement, USciences students have the unique opportunity to take private lessons in woodwinds and strings, percussion and brass, and enroll in courses in fields as varied as music, e-publishing, multimedia, and dance, at UArts campus in Center City Philadelphia.

Dr. Kevin Murphy, chair of the Humanities Department, was recently appointed as exchange program coordinator and moving forward, will serve as the point of contact for all USciences’ students interested in taking a course at UArts, and for all faculty interested in learning more about the partnership.
