USP Gets Funding For KIZ Initiatives
When Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell revealed the recent Keystone Innovation Zone (KIZ) funds on April 11, University of the Sciences in Philadelphia received funding for two initiatives with exciting potential. A grant with the Wistar Institute was tagged to develop a High Throughput Screening and Development Facility, while a grant with Thomas Jefferson University was aimed at establishing a functional Office of Technology Transfer at USP. USP's Class of 2007 Ushered Into the "Real World"
"You have accomplished much thus far," USP President Dr. Philip P. Gerbino told USP’s 186th graduating class on May 23. "Yet as your career begins there is still much to do." (read more)

Ethics in the Workplace
With the growth and expansion of research and technology, ethical misconduct in research and the workplace have been reported to occur at an alarming rate. The College of Graduate Studies will focus on the overall issue by sponsoring a four-part lunch series titled, "Ethics in the Workplace." The third workshop, "
Ethical Decisions in Health Care," is scheduled for Monday, June 11, from 12-2 p.m. (read more)

Philadelphia Middle School Students Participate in Science Day at USP
As a reward for their scientific achievements during the year, 30 middle school students took part in Science Day at USP on Wednesday, June 6. The students were hosted by Dr. Lois Peck (biological sciences), who also directs the Summer Institute for Middle Grade Science Teachers at USP. The students where chosen by teachers who participated in the 2006 Summer Institute. (read more)

Smedley Elected to Local School Board
USP Student Government Association (SGA) president Gary Smedley PharmD'11 is batting a thousand when it comes to elections in 2007. First, he was tabbed to serve as USP’s SGA president, and now, he was elected to the Carbondale Area School Board in the May 2007 primary. (read more)

News for Faculty
Faculty Council Meeting
The Faculty Council meeting will be held on June 7
at 10 a.m. in the AstraZeneca Auditorium in the McNeil Science and Technology Center. There are multiple items on the agenda.


Going the Extra Mile
On May 26, 2007, Miriam Diaz-Gilbert (humanities) competed in the Old Dominion 50-mile marathon run in Virginia. She finished the marathon in 11:32:11, almost an hour faster than her last race. And to top it off, she did it despite the 101 degree heat. (read more)

Medical Library Association Annual Conference has USP Presence
The Annual Conference of the Medical Library Association was held from May 18 through May 23 in Philadelphia. USP faculty attended two all-day workshops on Saturday, May 19 in the McNeil Science and Technology Center’s computer lab. (read more)

The Senior Leadership Team met on May 29 and covered the following issues: strategic planning, commencement, dean’s report, and human resources benefits update.

News from the Office of Operations: New Password Policy Started June 4
A change in password policies took effect on June 4. In addition to increased security, password policy changes will also mean that users will only have to remember one username and one password to access the campus network, Outlook/Exchange, WebAdvisor, off-campus library resources, AdAstra, Angel, Informer, Portal and more systems down the road. Tactical Planning Subcommittees Formed for Strategic Plan
The Legacy, Vision and Value Strategic Plan has reached the tactical planning phase, and the Senior Leadership Team has approved the formation of tactical planning subcommittees that will develop specific recommendations for tactical objectives, action plans, budgeting requirements, outcomes, and assessment methods for each of the eight strategic areas. The safety committee would like to remind you to report physical hazards that you encounter by submitting a work order to the Facilities Services Department. (read more with links to the safety checklist).

Minimum Wage Increasing July 1, 2007
Effective July 1, 2007, minimum wage will be increasing in the State of Pennsylvania to $7.15 per hour.  This will have an impact on students that are being hired to work during the summer months. (read more)

Changes to Benefit Plans
There have been changes to the dental plan as well as life insurance and long-term disability insurance. (read more)

Benefit Advisory Committee Coming Soon
Beginning with the new fiscal year, Human Resources will be forming a benefit advisory committee comprised of faculty and staff.  More information will be forthcoming under separate cover as well as in future editions of this newsletter.
