Security of Radioactive Materials

• Radioactive materials must be controlled so that unauthorized persons do not have access. Therefore, stock vials, test samples, and radioactive wastes must be locked up or in a locked laboratory when unattended, even for a short time.

• When visitors are not accompanied by authorized laboratory personnel, find out who they are and why they are there.

• If radioactive materials must be stored in refrigerators or freezers outside of the laboratory, the refrigerator or freezer must be locked at all times.

• Do not store radioactive materials, sources or waste in common rooms, i.e., counting rooms, centrifuge rooms and cold rooms.
