PACKING INSTRUCTION- 602 SUMMARY
CATEGORY A INFECTIOUS SUBSTANCES

Specimen Packaging

• Leakproof primary receptacle(s) [Must use glass, metal or plastic primary receptacles which have a leakproof seal, such as heat seal, skirted stopper or metal crimp seal. For screw caps, use tape, paraffin sealing tape or the manufactured locking closure.] A leakproof secondary packaging. Other than for solid infectious substances, absorbent material in sufficient quantity to absorb the entire contents placed between the primary receptacle(s) and the secondary packaging; if multiple fragile primary receptacles are placed in a single secondary packaging, they must be either individually wrapped or separated so as to prevent contact between them.An itemized list of contents, enclosed between the secondary packaging and the outer packaging.
• A rigid outer packaging of adequate strength for its capacity, weight and intended use. The smallest external dimension must be not less than 100 mm (4 inches).

Labeling Outer Package

• DOT - approved Class 6 Infectious Substance label."Infectious Substance, Affecting Humans, UN 2814" or "Infectious Substance, Affecting Animals, UN 2900" and net quantity of infectious substance.Name and telephone number of a person responsible (marked durably and legibly).If shipment includes >50 mL or 50g of a Category A infectious substance, then add a DOT - approved "Danger, Do Not Load On Passenger Aircraft" label to the outer container. [The package must be assigned to cargo aircraft only.]
• Orientation arrows are required to be placed on two opposite sides of a package containing liquid dangerous goods. Orientation arrows are only required for infectious substances if the primary container exceeds 50 mL.

Shippers Dangerous Goods Declaration Form

• Name, address and telephone number of shipper and recipient.Strike out the non-applicable "Aircraft" box.Strike out the non-applicable "Radioactive" box."Nature and Quantity of Dangerous Goods" section of Declaration Form - complete this section using information provided in Table 2, Shipping Summary Table and DOT's Hazardous Materials Table (172.101).24-hour emergency response telephone number. (Someone who can provide detailed, product specific and emergency information.) Name and title of signatory, place, and date.Shipper's signature - only trained and certified individuals may sign the form.
• The technical name of the infectious substance is mandatory on the Shipper's Declaration. If unknown, the technical name is "Suspected Category A Infectious Substance".
  

Packages

• Packages must meet the design type testing and certification requirements and bear the UN specification mark. (Read manufacturer's instructions for UN certified packages). Packages must be in good condition, present no hazard or evidence of external contamination.The smallest external dimension must have at least 100 mm (4 inches).
• Whatever the intended temperature of the consignment, the primary receptacle or the secondary packaging must be capable of withstanding, without leakage, an internal pressure producing a pressure differential of not less than 95 kPa and temperatures in the range of minus 40 degrees F to 130 degrees F.

A quantity of 30 mL or less of dangerous goods in Classes 3, 8 or 9 is permitted in each primary receptacle containing infectious substances when used to maintain viability and stabilize or prevent degradation of the infectious substances. (e.g., preservatives like formalin or alcohol) The limit for the entire package is 1 liter. This small quantity does not need to be labeled or documented.
