As University of the Sciences prepares to open the doors of its new Integrated Professional Education Complex (IPEX) this fall, the facility has recently been deemed “environmentally friendly” under the standards set by the Green Building Initiative's Green Globes rating and assessment system.
Because this new 57,000-square-foot, three-story building applies practices aimed to promote energy, water, and environmental efficiency, it achieved 684 out of 926 possible points, for a score of 74 percent. This score is equivalent to a three Green Globes rating – with four Green Globes being the highest ranking a building can accomplish.
“USciences demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainability through the policies and procedures that were executed in the final construction of the IPEX building,” said Mark Russell, PhD, a Green Globes assessor who completed an on-site evaluation in May.
The IPEX boasts several eco-friendly features, including:
  • Green roof made up of 20,000-square-feet of vegetation, which will hold nearly 15,000 gallons of water when fully saturated and help to avoid creating a heat island
  • Steel super structure made from recycled metal
  • Energy-efficient equipment that will reduce energy costs by approximately 40 percent
  • Breaking system on the elevator that recaptures energy
“An in-person review of the IPEX building and its systems was helpful in determining whether the green strategies we described in our initial design plan have been implemented successfully,” said Craig Washington, capital construction manager at USciences. “At the end of the day, we want the best final product for both our University community and the environment.”
A sleek, modern, and bright building, IPEX combines innovative learning spaces and student lounge space with simulation labs, a clinical lab, mock patient exam rooms, and conference rooms. IPEX will also house the provisionally accredited physician assistant studies graduate professional program; as well as serve as a hub for students to study, interact, and learn with and from one another.
This building showcases an integrated education model that allows students from several disciplines – including pharmacy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, exercise science, psychology, and healthcare business and policy – to obtain traditional and hands-on experience.
The University community is encouraged to celebrate the completion of the IPEX at a special ribbon cutting ceremony and reception slated for Thursday, Sept. 18, from 1:30 to 3 p.m.  This ceremony is among several events on tap during Alumni Reunion weekend (Sept. 18-21).
