The Athletic/Recreation Center (ARC) at USciences will transform into a sea of pink next month, as hundreds of students and members of the University community gather for the fourth annual Pink-a-Thon on Friday, Oct. 25, from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.

“The first Pink-a-Thon was held when I was a freshman, and it has evolved so much since then,” said Princy John PharmD’16, coordinator of the event. “It’s surreal to see more and more students and organizations on campus come forward each year to participate and help raise awareness for such a great cause."
Pink-A-Thon is hosted at USciences during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month to help raise money for the Linda Creed Foundation – a Philadelphia-based, nonprofit organization that provides education, advocacy, and direct healthcare for individuals in need of services, such as free mammograms. This six-hour event consists of dancing, games, raffles, and activities.
According to Donna Duncan, executive director of Linda Creed, USciences’ Pink-a-Thon events have collectively raised more than $12,000 over the past three years.
Except for skin cancers, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the U.S., accounting for nearly one in three cancers diagnosed among women. This year alone, 232,340 new cases of breast cancer are expected to occur among women in the U.S., while approximately 2,240 new cases of breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in men, according to the American Cancer Society.
The theme for this year’s event is “Fighting Back Against Breast Cancer,” and t-shirts will soon be available for purchase. Students are encouraged to use the hashtag #thinkpink on social media sites to promote Pink-a-Thon, as well as share photos and posts during the event.
Some of the activities on tap this year include a student deejay, Zumba, face painting, relay races, and water pong. Prizes include an autographed photo from a Sixers basketball player, Rave Cinema tickets, and gift cards to local establishments
