Dr. Suzanne Murphy Named Dean of Misher College of Arts and Sciences

University of the Sciences in Philadelphia recently named Suzanne K. Murphy, PhD, as dean of Misher College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Murphy had served as the College’s interim dean since August 2007.

Misher College offers programs of study in the natural sciences, social sciences, and liberal arts. In her role as dean, Dr. Murphy will manage collaboration with faculty in developing a strategic plan for the College, leading the College in developing new programs, and working toward establishing articulations with other institutions, such as medical, optometry, and dental health professions programs.

Dr. Murphy joined University of the Sciences in 1985 as an assistant professor of biology. She is currently the director of the Pre-Health Professions Program and previously served as associate dean of Misher College and director of undergraduate programs in the Department of Biological Sciences. In the 24 years Dr. Murphy has been at the University, she has received the Faculty Special Recognition Award, the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching, the Homiller Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Alpha Lambda Delta Award for Outstanding Freshman Professor, and the Alpha Chi Award for Outstanding Science Professor.

Dr. Murphy is past-president of the Northeast Association of Advisors for the Health Professions and an executive officer of the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions. She is an active member of the American Society for Cell Biology, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Association for Women in Science, and Association for Women in Cancer Research.

Dr. Murphy earned her PhD from Hahnemann University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pa., and completed her post-doctoral fellowship at the Albert Einstein Medical Center Department of Pediatrics and SmithKline and French Laboratories Corp. Department of Tumor Biology. An animal lover, she has three dogs, three cats, and approximately 40 koi fish. She is a native of, and currently resides in, Plymouth Meeting, Pa.
