Dr. Peter Berget Named Chair of Biological Sciences

Peter Berget, PhD, has been named chair and professor of biological sciences at University of the Sciences, it was recently announced by Dr. Suzanne Murphy, dean of USciences’ Misher College of Arts and Sciences.
Dr. Berget’s previous appointment was at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), where he had been associate professor of biological sciences since 1986 and a member of the Molecular Biosensor and Imaging Center in the Mellon College of Science (MCS). He was an affiliated faculty member at the Ray and Stephanie Lane Center for Computational Biology, School of Computer Science. In 2005, Dr. Berget received the Richard Moore Education Award for his substantial and sustained contributions to the educational mission of the MCS.  In 2009, Dr. Berget received the Julius Ashkin Teaching Award for unusual devotion and effectiveness in teaching undergraduate students in the MCS.
 
Currently, Dr. Berget’s research focuses on the development of single chain antibodies as platforms for in vitro and in vivo biosensors. Dr. Berget, who is an active member of the new National Technology Center for Networks and Pathways, will bring his laboratory to USciences where he will continue his research. Dr. Berget also has an interest in working with gifted and talented students and in designing early undergraduate research design courses.
 
Before his positions at CMU, Dr. Berget was associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, TX. He received his bachelor of science and doctoral degrees in biochemistry from the College of Biological Sciences at the University of Minnesota. He completed his postdoctoral training in biology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
