George E. Downs, PharmD’72, dean emeritus of Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and professor of clinical pharmacy at University of the Sciences, has been appointed the University’s faculty athletic representative (FAR) by University president Dr. Helen Giles-Gee. Faculty athletic representatives play an important role in promoting academic integrity in intercollegiate athletics, to facilitate the integration of the athletics and academic components of the collegiate community, and to oversee the impact of athletics on student-athletes’ academic standing and well-being. As such, they bring their experience as an educator and an understanding of faculty values to the academic enhancement of student-athletes. In this role, Dr. Downs will meet with other institutions’ FARs and attend NCAA conferences to discuss athletic matters that may impact academics.

Dr. Downs replaces Vincent J. Willey P’92, PharmD’99 who had served as the FAR since 2011 and recently left the University to become staff vice president for industry sponsored research at HealthCore.

Dr. Downs has been on the faculty of University of the Sciences in Philadelphia since 1972 and has taught at both Hahnemann University Hospital and the Philadelphia Veteran’s Administration Medical Center. Over the course of his career, he has served in the US Public Health Service and was a senior resident in hospital pharmacy at the University of Arkansas Medical Center. He was involved with the Drug Systems Research group that developed the first Medication Error Research Program. He was assistant director of pharmacy and central supply at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and director of society services at the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists.

In addition, Dr. Downs has served as president of the National Rho Chi Honor Society, and has been honored by the American College of Apothecaries for his support of community pharmacy. He is past-president of the Health Promotion Council of Southeastern Pennsylvania and serves on the board of directors of S.A.R.P.H., the impaired pharmacists program in Pennsylvania, and the Public Health Management Corporation. He remains actively involved in numerous professional associations.

USciences athletics was recently recognized as having the sixth highest academic success rate among all Division II programs in the NCAA’s 2013-2014 report.
