More than 1,000 members of the University of the Sciences community gathered Thursday, Sept. 12, at a Beam Signing Party, to celebrate the construction of its new academic building, the Integrated Professional Education Complex (IPEX), and leave their mark on a steel beam that will be part of the building structure. The signed beam will be one of the last beams placed in the new building, and will be used to support the stairs at the front entrance.

With temperatures soaring in the high 80s, students, faculty, and staff members cooled down at the “hard hat ice cream” bar. The ice cream was served in miniature USciences construction hats to recognize the progress of the IPEX building. This 57,000-square-foot, three-story building will showcase an integrated education model that permits students from several disciplines, including pharmacy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, exercise science, psychology, and healthcare business and policy, to obtain traditional and hands-on experience. IPEX is slated to open its doors in the spring of 2014.

By the end of the beam signing event, the white steel beam was fully covered with signatures, Twitter handles, and Greek letters – all showcasing the various personalities of the University community.
