Mixing fun with food and the wonders of chemistry, Assistant Professor of Chemistry Dr. Fred Schaefer was at Reading Terminal Market on Saturday, June 16 for the Consumer Cooperative Management Association Convention. The host organization was Weaver's Way Coop.
“My theme was food chemistry because most of the participation organizations were food coops,” said Dr. Schaefer. “We investigated the rotation of the plane of polarization of light by sugars, made gooey worms, did milk art, looked at cabbage juice as an acid base indicator, froze some kale and chard that lacked plate appeal, and had fun generating oxygen and seeing how it supported combustion.”
Dr. Schaefer continues his monthly table top chemistry show at Earth Bread Brewery in Mt. Airy on July 17 starting from 6-9 p.m. He will cover electrolytes.
