Outstanding Sportsmanship and Leadership Awards
By Marc Caserio, Director of Campus Recreation

The Department of Campus Recreation would like to recognize the following individuals who displayed outstanding sportsmanship and leadership over the course of the 2008-09 Intramural Season.

These individuals should also be commended for their dedication and enthusiasm for intramural sports. Without these students our programs wouldn't be as successful. It was a difficult decision in choosing just three winners because we have so many students who play with class, respect and civility. It is a great honor for me to bestow these awards so without further ado, the winners are:

Outstanding Sportsmanship and Leadership Awards
The Department of Campus Recreation would like to recognize the following individuals who displayed outstanding sportsmanship and leadership over the course of the 2008-09 Intramural Season.

These individuals should also be commended for their dedication and enthusiasm for intramural sports. Without these students our programs wouldn't be as successful. It was a difficult decision in choosing just three winners because we have so many students who play with class, respect and civility. It is a great honor for me to bestow these awards so without further ado, the winners are:

Sportsmanship Recipient #1 (Male)
Sean Whalen, PharmD’11
Since taking over the intramural program in the fall of 2007 Sean has been a role model for his peers. His enthusiasm, competitive spirit and outstanding sportsmanship for sports/intramurals have been inspiring and admirable. As competitive as he is, he never disputes or questions a call made by an official. Furthermore I have never witnessed Sean taunt another player or berate a teammate. He remains positive even through defeats. Sean was also instrumental in the Raiders winning Basketball and Flag Football titles.

Sportsmanship Recipient #2 (Female)
Dana Palmer PharmD’12
As the Athletic Director the past two years for AST, Dana has shown great energy and excitement for intramural sports. She always makes sure that the ladies of AST are involved. Under her leadership and guidance AST won the 2008 Volleyball Championship. This past year AST lost in both the Soccer and Volleyball championship games however Dana displayed excellent sportsmanship in defeat. She congratulated the winning teams and still had the competitive drive to participate in other events. Dana conducts herself in a professional manner and is always upbeat and positive.

Sportsmanship Recipient #3 (Team)
Team Hitsticks
Since the majority of the team is graduating, the Hitsticks are a team that I will truly miss during intramural competition. The Hitsticks are second to none in class and sportsmanship. They have played each game with the heart and passion of true champions. They never once argued with an official or taunted the opposing team. More important they had fun and enjoyed every moment of participating in intramurals. They also won the 2008 Flag Football Championship and been too another. The Hitsticks consist of the following Steve Azar DPT’09, HS’09; Adam Fuline PharmD’09; Richard Cipoletti DPT’09, HS’09; Rick Yarznbowicz – DPT’10, Frank Staino DPT’10; Andy Azar DPT’11; and Andrew Coccia HS’09.

Each winner will receive plaques for this honor. In addition their photos will be posted on both the "Wall of Fame" in the ARC lobby and on our website.

The Department of Campus Recreation would like to thank all the intramural participants who play with good sportsmanship. Remember the intramural program is only as good as the students that participate. We are looking forward to an even better 2009-10 intramural season.
