During National Physical Therapy Month, USciences’ physical therapy students will strive to educate the community about the importance of physical activity and getting back into motion. To spread the word about their profession, the Student Physical Therapy Association (SPTA) has planned a host of activities throughout the month of October for members of the University community to become involved.

On October 13, the SPTA Club is co-hosting a guest lecture with the Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA) featuring internationally-recognized author, speaker, and disability movement advocate, Gary Karp. Karp, who has been living in a wheelchair since a spinal cord injury in 1973, will speak of the innate capacity in us all to survive, even after trauma, and the importance of reaching our potential.

On October 14, SPTA will host a Physical Therapy volleyball game in the Quad. Proceeds from the volleyball game will be donated to the Magee Eagles Quad Rugby Team.

From 9 p.m. on October 15 to 9 a.m. on October 16, SPTA will be co-hosting the first annual Pink-a-thon, a 12-hour dance-a-thon, to raise money for Linda Creed-Fighting Breast Cancer with Heart. The organization was the first local organization to address breast cancer as a serious and widespread disease threatening the lives of women living in the Delaware Valley. Today, Linda Creed-Fighting Breast Cancer with Heart empowers women and their families to talk about breast cancer, learn about it, and take control of their health and their lives. The event will be held in the ARC lobby.

The fourth annual Magee Eagles Quad Rugby scrimmage will take place on October 26. The fastest growing wheelchair sport in the country, students will have the opportunity to meet with the quad rugby players and learn more about the game. SPTA will collect donations and sell raffle tickets for great prizes to provide further support to the Magee Eagles Quad Rugby Team.

Additionally, SPTA will be hosting their annual clothing drive throughout the month, as well as sponsoring PT Bingo and a bake sale.
