University of the Sciences proudly recognized graduate student Snehal Atwe PhD’14 with the 2014 Founders’ Day Graduate Student Award of Merit during the University’s 193rd Founders’ Day ceremony on Thursday, Feb. 20.

“It was a pleasure to nominate Snehal for recognition of her entrepreneurial spirit and innovation,” said Pardeep Gupta, PhD, associate professor of pharmaceutics at USciences. “Through painstaking effort and numerous hours, she was instrumental in designing a number of peptide motifs based on the structure of growth hormone binding protein.”

Atwe took on an additional research project even after the experimental part of her doctoral research was complete. Though this project added a significant workload to her full time graduate student instructorship and doctoral research, she was able to identify a peptide showing high promise for specific binding to growth hormones. This peptide has potential for application in drug delivery and other applications, leading to the University filing a provisional patent based on her research.

“Snehal has distinguished herself through her research in polymer nanoparticles,” said Dr. Heidi Anderson, provost and vice president of academic affairs. “She has engaged in innovative research and service that is a reflection of our Founders.”

Each year, Founders’ Day at USciences recognizes its establishment on Feb. 23, 1821, as Philadelphia College of Pharmacy — the first college of pharmacy in North America, which is now a part of USciences. As part of the ceremony, faculty members were formally installed into their respective endowed positions and merit awards were presented to two current students and a faculty member. An honorary degree of science was also presented to Dr. Harkishan Singh, a world-renowned pharmaceutical academic, researcher, and science historian with more than 50 years of experience.
