The University of the Sciences community will unite for a day devoted to volunteerism as its MLK Day of Service will be held on Monday, Jan. 20. Students and faculty are encouraged to participate in a variety of service activities planned across the University community, ranging from donation drives to community clean ups.

“Dr. King gave his life for the cause of justice and love, which is why it is particularly appropriate for us to remember such a legacy through acts of service on his day of remembrance,” said Walter W. Perry, EdD, associate dean of students and director of multicultural affairs.

Although this is the first official campus-wide service day, students and faculty are no strangers to serving the local community on Martin Luther King, Jr., Day. Last year, more than 300 students from each of the five colleges on campus participated in various activities, including health fairs, park clean ups, and donation drives. Dr. Perry anticipates a larger turnout this year because classes have been cancelled that day.

The event will kick off with an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. in the McNeil Science and Technology Center. From there, students, faculty, and staff will disperse to their various projects.  Planned service activities, include:
  • 9 a.m. to noon: Health fair at Mount Zion Baptist Church (Samson students only).
  • 9:30 a.m. to noon: Clark Park cleanup and mulching (co-sponsored with UC Green).
  • 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.: The Woodlands Cemetery cleanup.
  • 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Mt. Moriah Cemetery clean-up and tombstone transcription.
  • 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Philadelphia Veterans’ Comfort House cleanup.

Because each service activity requires a different number of volunteers, students and faculty are urged to pre-register at www.usciences.edu/MLKDay. Various donation drives and informational sessions will also be held across campus from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information regarding MLK Day of Service, contact AJ Young at a.young@usciences.edu or 215.596.8734, or visit the website.

The University community is encouraged to help spread the word about this event, as well as share their service activities on social media by using #USciencesMLKDay.
