A group of students from South Korea’s Far East University (FEU) have been kept quite busy at USciences and in Philadelphia this week. Their two-week stay follows a memorandum of understanding which was signed in May with FEU to increase “educational, scientific, and cultural experience” of students and faculty from both countries. A group of USciences students recently returned from South Korea with the same goal.

“The students have been touring around for the last week and it has been a blend of culture and education. It’s been an interesting time. In between the traveling, we’ve had lectures on many topics and visited many clinical settings,” said Dr. Paula Kramer, chair of the occupational therapy department.

Educational trips, like those to the Children’s hospital of Philadelphia and the Magee Rehabilitation Center, allow the exchange students to compare their cultural knowledge of occupational therapy with happenings in the United States. In addition to such trips, the students have enjoyed the Philadelphia Art Museum, the Franklin Institute, Philly cheesesteaks and much more.

“With clinical settings, there are many similarities [between the U.S. and Korea] and also a few differences to Korean settings. But when it comes to community settings, it is a very different story. I’ve gotten many new ideas and insights I might bring back to Korea and apply to our work and culture,” said Seulki Lim, an occupational therapy student participating in the exchange program.

All of the students also expressed enthusiasm about their visit with preschoolers at KenCrest Northeast Center in Kensington. The school is unlike those in Korea because it uses an inclusion method for educating children who are developing at different rates. They enjoyed making the comparison.

Also, visiting through the exchange with Lim, are Professor Yumi Ju, Hee Jin Jo, Gihlim Jung, and Hyub Kim.
