I regret to inform the USciences community of the passing of Herbert S. Carlin MS’59, HonDSc’84. Herb passed away Thursday evening, March 3 at the age of 78.
After he received a BS from the Rhode Island College of Pharmacy and Allied Sciences, Herb earned his masters of pharmacy degree from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science in 1959. We would later honor his work in pharmacy with an honorary doctor of science in 1984.
Herb was a past president of both the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and American Pharmacists Association. He also served on the boards of the National Health Council and American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education, as well as on several committees of the United States Pharmacopeia.
During the course of his life, he earned numerous awards, including the Harvey A.K. Whitney Lecture Award and the Hugo Schaefer Award, and received an honorary membership in USP.
Herb’s connection with the University extends to board member William S. Marth, President & CEO of Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, who is married to Herb’s daughter Judy.
A scholarship is being established in Herb’s name. Anyone wishing to contribute should send a donation payable to University of the Sciences and note in the memo, Herb Carlin Scholarship. (For those outside the University, please send your donation to: Office of the President, University of the Sciences, 600 South 43rd Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104)
