Earlier this week, University of the Sciences completed another step towards the construction of a new, approximately 57,000 square foot addition to the University’s Science and Technology Center. The Pennsylvania Higher Education Facilities Authority (PHEFA) sold $31 million in revenue bonds for USciences on Tuesday, helping to push the project into action. The addition will further develop the USciences’ campus which currently comprises 22 buildings located on a 36-acre site in the University City area of Philadelphia.

Along with funding the building, which will house the new Physician Assistant program, proceeds from the revenue bonds will be used to expand the central utility plant, finance other capital improvements and renovations, fund interest on bonds during construction and pay for costs and expenses incurred through bond issuance.

The doors of this exciting new addition to campus are expected to open in spring of 2014 with ground-breaking and construction scheduled to begin later this year, according to Joe Trainor, senior vice president for finance at USciences.

The new building will be located directly behind the current Samson College building and will feature green roof technology. The addition of a green roof emphasizes the University’s commitment to the environment and serves useful purposes for the building, such as absorbing rainwater and providing insulation. The high-tech and socially aware approach of the addition’s construction complements the new programs set to be taught within its walls upon completion and into the future.

More information will be forthcoming as the pre-construction work phases into a ground-breaking and the actual construction begins.
