During the spring 2012 semester, Dr. Claudia Parvanta, professor and chair of behavioral and social sciences, once again partnered with the Dorrance H. Hamilton Media Commons at WHYY to expose USciences students to utilizing video for communication. The students learned video production techniques before shooting, acting, and editing their own public service announcements that tied into healthcare.

“This year we had both pharmacy and public health students work on projects,” said Dr. Parvanta. “With a grant from the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation, pharmacy students created culturally relevant videos to motivate patients to take medications as prescribed. Students shot videos in Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Spanish, Turkish and Vietnamese in addition to reaching out to African American patients.”

Public health students focused on community needs. For example, Chirag Patel MPH’13 discussed the public health concerns of “Fracking;” while Daniel Bang MPH’13 and Nasima Mannan MPH’13 created a video being used for promotion by Healing the Children NJ, an organization that donates medical care to children in need within New Jersey and beyond.

Bang and Mannan also teamed up with the USciences Devils to produce a video focused on “striking out hepatitis B.”

“We hope to continue this collaboration with WHYY, which allows our students to contribute to the community using their creative as well as their scientific skills,” Dr. Parvanta said.
