Three student members from University of the Sciences’ Alpha Chi Honor Society recently presented at the first Alpha Chi Super-Regional Convention in Little Rock, Ark., held March 25-27, 2010. Suzanne George BI’11, Minh Vong BI’10, and Aali Javid BI’10 were accompanied on the trip by Dr. Alison Mostrom, associate professor of biological sciences and the University’s Alpha Chi chapter sponsor.

The convention, themed Multiple talents, Multiple opportunities, drew more than 400 honor students from colleges and universities across the nation. Student papers, readings, performances, and exhibits were the centerpiece of the convention and offered students an opportunity to gain valuable presentation experience and have a strong resume-booster.

Vying for the “top presenter” prize of $100, George presented The Influence of Sugars and Anogeissus Leocarpus Gum on Nematodes, Vong presented Yeast as a Model System to study Human Adenosine Deaminase, and Javid presented Late Night Chess: The significance of the late night talk shuffle on networks, advertisers, and the home viewer.

Carlotta Walls LaNier, the youngest of the heroic “Little Rock Nine,” delivered the convention’s keynote address as she shared personal tribulations from the oppression she and eight other African American students faced when they were refused their civil right to enter Little Rock Central High School in 1957. In addition to addressing civil rights, convention speakers and panels touched-on a variety of social issues, including literacy, hunger, and poverty.

Alpha Chi is a national general scholarship society which recognizes academically outstanding students in the top 10 percent of their class. The Pennsylvania Kappa Chapter at University of the Sciences is open to students of all majors, expect those which are eligible for Rho Chi and Psi Chi membership (students are eligible for selection into only one of these honor societies).
