Thanks to a grant from the City of Philadelphia to the University City District (UCD), the small concrete triangle located at the intersection of 42nd Street and Woodland Avenue will be getting an extreme makeover.

The closing of a small roadway that bisected the triangle located outside East Building allowed landscape architects to create an oasis with trees, planters, and bistro tables.

"This project is another fine example of UCD's success in developing collaborations that enhance the quality of life in our neighborhood," said Vice President for Community Partnerships Elizabeth Bressi-Stoppe. "We were very excited when Seth Budick from UCD approached us about developing this difficult site on campus into an innovative adventure in place-making."

Scheduled for opening in September, designs call for the utilization of fallen trees from The Woodlands in the planter boxes.

"The planters at the plaza will capture a substantial amount of water that would otherwise runoff as stormwater," said Budick. "The project will also incorporate a substantial amount of repurposed wood, both in the form of fallen trees from the Woodlands, floor joists from a building renovation in University City, and potentially other materials as well."

The University will share in the upkeep of the small plot, which has been cleared and the surface painted in anticipation of the installation.

"The new pedestrian plaza will provide amenities for everyone at University of the Sciences and for all of our neighbors, enlivening a forlorn corner, and providing even more activity, lighting and safety at this location," Bressi-Stoppe said. "We're also grateful to everyone at the city of Philadelphia who had the vision and provided the funding."
