University
of the Sciences will showcase the diversity and growth of research pursuits on
campus during its 10th Annual Research Day on Thursday, April 12, 2012.
Research Day recognizes and highlights the research efforts of faculty, and
undergraduate and graduate students to encourage and promote communication and
collaboration among researchers.
USciences
distinguishes itself by offering undergraduate students the opportunity to
conduct research early in their academic careers. The diverse research activity
on display spans several aspects of the University’s scholarly pursuits,
including:

Understanding
the toxicity of asbestos in lung cancer patients

Improving
methods for detection of renal markers in cancer patients

Probing
the relationships between obesity and pain, and smoking and Alzheimer's disease

Measuring
effectiveness of therapy for patients with spinal cord injury

Balance
training for patients with Parkinson's disease

Assessing
public health questions surrounding homeless veterans and their abilities to
use community services

Observing
the behavior of otters and penguins at the Philadelphia Zoo

Understanding
the role of the pharmacists in prevention and treatment of patients with high
blood pressure or diabetes
The day of activity commences from 11:30 a.m. to 1
p.m. in Wilson Hall with the 25th Annual John C. Krantz, Jr., Distinguished
Lecture by The Wistar Institute Cancer Center's Dario Altieri, MD, speaking on
"Cancer Networks and Drug Discovery.” Research Day continues with
presentations representing a record number 197 research abstracts on display
from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Athletic/Recreation Center. For more information on
