Dr. Vincent J. Willey P’92, PharmD’99, associate professor of pharmacy at Philadelphia College of Pharmacy at University of the Sciences has been appointed the University’s Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR). The appointment was made by University president, Dr. Philip P. Gerbino. Faculty athletic representatives are in place to promote academic integrity in intercollegiate athletics, to facilitate the integration of the athletics and academic components of the collegiate community, and to oversee institutional control of athletics on campus. As such, they bring their experience as an educator and an understanding of faculty values to the academic enhancement of student-athletes.
“Vince is excited about becoming our FAR,” said Athletic Director Paul Klimitas. “As an alumnus and former student-athlete, Vince knows the challenges our young people face every day and how to find the proper balance between academics and the intercollegiate experience.”
Dr. Willey replaces Dr. Joseph Ruane who stepped down from the position after the 2010-11 academic year and after serving as the university’s faculty athletic representative since 1999. USciences athletics was recently recognized as having the second highest Academic Success Rate (ASR) amongst all Division II programs in the NCAA’s 2009-2010 report. USciences student-athletes received a total of 76 individual and two team academic honors during the 2010-11 sports season.
“Dr. Ruane has fulfilled his role as FAR in a most professional manner,” added Klimitas. “He has always put integrity and student-athlete welfare first on his list of priorities. I know that Joe is held in high regard by our conference membership and at the NCAA Division II level. He has been with us as FAR since we first applied for NCAA membership and defined the position in our department.
Dr. Willey has been a full-time faculty member at the USciences since 2008. Prior to this position, he was the vice president of research for HealthCore, a health outcomes research company located in Wilmington, Delaware. Dr. Willey’s pharmacy practice experience spans the areas of community pharmacy, long-term care consulting, home infusion and ambulatory care clinical services. His teaching responsibilities include several therapeutic areas, biomedical literature evaluation, presentation skill development and use of statistics by clinicians.
