Most times pharmacists look their patients in the eye when talking about medications and healthy lifestyles. But Loren Martinez PharmD’13 never got the chance to see her patients when she spoke about hypertension recently. That’s because the Marlton, NJ, resident went on air on June 27, 2012, via 1680 AM Actualidad Informativa, as part of their “Su Salud,” or “Your Health,” segment to spread valuable information, and reach many more listeners than she would standing behind the counter.

Martinez was completing her advanced pharmacy practice experience rotation at a Milly’s Pharmacy in Camden, N.J., with preceptor Melissa Wood PharmD’04 when the opportunity to talk about hypertension on air presented itself.

“Since the area that I was in was predominately Hispanic, I decided to choose a topic that has been known to affect that population,” Martinez said. “We talked a lot about what foods can increase one’s blood pressure as well as ways individuals can reduce their blood pressure without medications.”

Martinez worked with Miguel Arriaga, former manager of Milly’s Pharmacy, to fine tune her message. She conducted the interview in English, while Arriaga would translate into Spanish to ensure that the information was understood by the listeners.

“This may be the start of a new career for Loren. PCP is quite proud of her for representing the profession and helping to address cardiovascular disease,” said Assistant Professor Grace Earl, PharmD.

During the interview, she gave examples of foods that may be high in salt or caffeine that may lead to an increase in blood pressure.

“I feel strongly about promoting patient health and healthy lifestyles and this was the perfect opportunity to address such a specific population,” Martinez said.
