The Office of Academic Accommodations has become the Office of Student Accommodations and is now under the leadership of Monica L. Vance. Vance comes to University of the Sciences from Community College of Philadelphia and has been educating students with disabilities for nearly 10 years. Vance has earned a BS in special education from West Chester University and is currently completing an MS in higher education at Drexel University.

The Office of Student Accommodations is guided by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The services provided through this office are in compliance with federal laws established to protect the civil rights of individuals with disabilities for equal access. Additionally, USciences is committed to creating an environment where all students feel welcome and supported and are given the opportunity to succeed.

The new office will continue to coordinate ADA accommodations for students identified as having a qualifying disability. Students who believe they are in need of accommodations are encouraged to self-identify, self-advocate and be proactive. This is to ensure that they receive and utilize the appropriate accommodations and support that will help them be successful in their educational pursuits.

The office is also committed to educating the campus community about disability awareness and promoting a shift in attitudes and behaviors that will create a more inclusive environment for students with disabilities where barriers and limitations are minimal. The goal is to move beyond tolerance toward total acceptance and appreciation for differences among individuals.

Future endeavors for the Office of Student Accommodations include an updated website as well as an electronic newsletter with information and resources for students, faculty, and staff. Vance will coordinate with various departments, offices, and faculty to determine how services for students with disabilities can be enhanced. New resources for disability support services will become available in the office as well.

The Office of Student Accommodations is located in the Academic Advising suite in Whitecar Hall, room 1111. Vance can be reached at 215.596.8758 and m.vance@usciences.edu.
