Joseph B. Schwartz, PhD, left behind a far-reaching legacy of pharmaceutics research and teaching when he passed in August 2006. The former Burroughs-Wellcome professor of Pharmaceutics and director of Industrial Pharmacy Research at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy (PCP) was a beloved faculty member at the College from 1981 to 2006.
In honor of Dr. Schwartz, on March 6, 2009, PCP and the Philadelphia Pharmaceutical Forum will present The Joseph B. Schwartz Memorial Symposium: Advances in Industrial Pharmacy, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. in the auditorium and atrium of the McNeil Science and Technology Center at University of the Sciences.
In conjunction with this symposium, local graduate students in the Pharmaceutical Sciences at area colleges and universities will present their research projects in a poster session supported by the Philadelphia Pharmaceutical Forum, a co-sponsor of the symposium.
Prior to joining the faculty at PCP, Dr. Schwartz held various research and supervisory positions at Merck Sharp and Dohme in the Pharmaceutical Research and Development Division, and held adjunct faculty appointments at the University of Rhode Island and the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy.
He served as chief editor of the PDA Journal of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, was a co-editor of the three volume series “Pharmaceutical Dosage Forms: Tablets,” and a section editor for “Remington: The Science and Practice of Pharmacy.” He served as a consultant to the industry and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and held memberships in the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS), the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences (APhA-APRS), the Controlled Release Society (CRS), the Parenteral Drug Association (PDA), Rho Chi and Sigma Xi, and served as an officer or executive committee member in many of these societies. Dr. Schwartz lectured in the People’s Republic of China, as well as Canada, Europe, Israel, Puerto Rico, South America, and throughout the United States. He was a Fellow of AAPS and APhA/APS Academy and received the 2006 AAPS Outstanding Educator award.

Posters
Graduate and undergraduate students in the Pharmaceutical Sciences at area colleges and universities are invited to submit abstracts of poster presentations by e-mail to Dr. Sy Gebrekidan (Sy_Gebrekidan@merck.com) no later than February 28, 2009. Posters should be mounted between 8:15 and 9:00 a.m. on the day of the symposium and available for registrants to view over the course of the day. A committee set up by the Philadelphia Pharmaceutical Forum will review the posters and the current Chair of the PPF will award cash prizes in three categories at the end of the symposium.
