University of the Sciences President Dr. Helen F. Giles-Gee has named John E. Vitali vice president of finance and administration for the University. Vitali comes to USciences from the Brooklyn Public Library (Brooklyn, N.Y.) where for the greater part of 13 years he has served as executive vice president for finance and administration and CFO.
At USciences, Vitali will oversee the offices of Finance, Controller, Facilities and Operations, Administrative and Auxiliary Services, and Public Safety. In addition, Vitali will manage the University’s contracted services with its dining and bookstore partners. Vitali will serve as a member of the president’s senior cabinet and staff key board of trustee committees including audit, finance, and investments while implementing policies and practices to support the University’s mission and strategic priorities.

At the Brooklyn Public Library (BPL), the fifth largest system of its kind in the U.S. and the ninth largest cultural nonprofit organization in NY City, Vitali has played a large role in managing the systems 58 neighborhood libraries, a business library, and its flagship Central Library with a combined $100 million operating budget and $62 million capital budget. He has been a vital member of an executive team leading a multi-year strategic planning process for the organization while also managing cross-functional teams that conceive and implement new service and business models.
In addition to his time at BPL, Vitali served in financial and administrative roles for the New York Restaurant School, Queens College/CUNY, and Saint Peter’s College. A life-long native of New Jersey and resident of Edison, Vitali holds an MEd in higher education administration from Rutgers University. He and his wife, Susan, have two adult children, Allison and David. He begins his USciences tenure on July 1, 2013.
