University of the Sciences CFO and Senior Vice President Joseph Trainor has been named Nonprofit CFO of the Year by the Philadelphia Business Journal. The awards, presented on July 7 in Philadelphia, are given to financial professionals in the Delaware Valley for outstanding performance in their roles as corporate financial stewards.
For the past four years, Trainor has served as CFO and senior vice president for finance at USciences having joined the USciences community in 1995. As CFO, Trainor has steered the University through a difficult economic environment. As noted in his awards bio, during his stewardship, “the university’s operating margin increased from 3.5 percent in 2008 to 7.5 percent in 2010, and its operating cash flow margins increased from 14.7 percent in 2008 to 18.6 percent in 2010.” Prior to his position at USciences, Trainor served in accounting and finance roles with Drexel University, Meritor Financial Group, and Deloitte (formerly Deloitte Haskins & Sells).
Trainor’s influence, however, extends beyond the University: He was instrumental in creating the University City District and has served as treasurer since its formation. He has been a member of Eastern Association of College and University Business Officers (EACUBO) for over 15 years, served for over 10 years, including as chair, of the Philadelphia chapter of the Area Program Committee (APC), and currently serves as a member of the APC and the communications committee. As chair of the APC, Trainor was active in developing low cost, relevant, one day professional development programs in the Philadelphia region. In addition, he has been a speaker for EACUBO and the National Association of College and University Business Officers programs. In his personal life, he has served in various leadership roles of his church.
