On April 9, the Rho Chi Society held its annual Induction Ceremony and Banquet at Galdo’s restaurant in Philadelphia. The Rho Chi Society is pharmacy’s national honor society and is composed of outstanding students, educators, and researchers in the field.
During the event, the University’s Alpha Tau Chapter welcomed 50 new students, honored the achievements of current members, and inducted new student officers to the 2009-2010 Board, including new chapter president, Réyan Denker PharmD’11. The induction was led by outgoing president Cheryl Abbas PharmD’10, and her fellow student officers.
As part of the ceremony, Shirley Paddock, RPh, MBA, director, GPD project management, Eli Lilly and Company, delivered the 58th Annual Julius W. Sturmer Memorial Lecture. Dr. Sturmer was a professor of pharmacy and dean of the Department of Pharmacy at the Medico-Chirugical College of Philadelphia when the institution merged with the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science in 1916. He retired in 1943 after serving a number of roles, including dean of postgraduate and special courses and dean of science. Dr. Sturmer passed away in 1952 and the annual lecture was named in his memory.
Melissa Rotz PharmD’12 was recognized as the 2009 Rho Chi Achievement Award Winner. The award is given to the third-year pharmacy student with the highest class GPA for the first two years of the University’s pre-professional curriculum.
