Social networks are quickly becoming a staple of both personal and business practices. In response to the growth of these services, the University’s Marketing Department recently created an official University of the Sciences Twitter account. What is Twitter, you ask?
Simply put, Twitter is a free social networking and microblogging service that allows you to answer the question, “What are you doing?” by sending short messages 140 characters in length, called “tweets”, to your “followers” who have signed up to receive them.
The service provides real-time connections and discourse. Following suite of many businesses and universities across the nation, University of the Sciences is leveraging the service primarily to promote news, events, and happenings on campus, and to keep a pulse on the healthcare and higher-ed industries. The service can also be utilized to “pitch” news to specific media outlets, interact with prospective and current students, and enable easy internal collaboration and group communication.
In September 2008, Twitter reported as having more than 3 million accounts, ranging from large international businesses, to small-town fire departments, to stay-at-home moms. Messages can be sent using the Twitter website directly, or via dozens of available third party applications, such as
Twhirl
on your desktop,
TwitterBerry
on a BlackBerry device, or
Twitterific
on an iPhone. The most common service for finding others on Twitter is
Twellow
, a directory of users.
