The “Make Safety Your Concern” Poster Contest is a key part of USciences effort to increase safety awareness, reduce crime, and provide information on the risks associated with improper use of alcohol. The contest is open to USciences students only. Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place safety poster contest winners:

  • First Place: iPad
  • Second Place: $50 Starbucks Gift Card
  • Third Place: $25 Barnes & Noble Gift Card

In addition, the first place poster will be displayed in buildings, video monitors, classrooms around campus, and the Public Safety website until next year’s contest winner is selected. See below for a complete set of rules.

A public safety week at USciences aims to raise student awareness regarding personal safety. From Monday, Nov. 28 through Friday, Dec. 4, a number of events, contests, and activities look to reinforce the theme “We’ve Got Your Back: Staying Safe and Secure at USciences On- and Off-Campus.”

“Our goal is to raise student awareness about their personal safety,” said Shawn Woods, Director of Public Safety. “We want students to take a more active role in their own well being and provide them with educational material to make good choices. For example, don’t leave your belongings unattended.”

To kick off the week, Mike Dilbeck, founder of the RESPONSE ABILITY Project, will be speaking in AstraZeneca Auditorium in the McNeil STC at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 28. Dilbeck, who recorded a personal greeting to the USciences community at http://youtu.be/GlZldMUiEko, brings his message of being an everyday hero. His theme has taken on an even greater meaning given the recent situation at Penn State.

Other activities include:

Tuesday, Nov. 29, 6-8 p.m.: Woman’s Self Defense Interactive Demonstration in the ARC Classroom. Refreshments to follow.

Wednesday, Nov. 30, 5p.m.: How are your Beer Goggles? Drinking and Driving simulation in the ARC Lobby

Thursday, Dec. 1, 5:30 p.m.: Public Safety Panel Discussion featuring University City safety representatives from Penn and Drexel police, the UC District, and the Philadelphia Police Department in PTC-140. Refreshments to follow.Winners of the poster contest will also be announced during the panel discussion.

Information tables throughout the week will have information on medical amnesty, alcohol awareness, and the Penn Transit system. Students will also be able sign up for the Emergency Alert System.

Friday,  Dec. 2: Look for a listserv announcing the Tip of the Day winners.
